How to Make a Spooky or Gothic-Themed Junk Journal

A spooky or gothic-themed junk journal is the perfect way to embrace dark aesthetics, vintage horror, or eerie beauty in a creative and personalized way. Whether you love Victorian gothic, haunted house vibes, or occult-inspired themes, this guide will help you craft a journal that feels truly magical and mysterious.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

For a gothic junk journal, focus on materials that evoke mystery, decay, and old-world charm. Here are some ideas:

Essential Supplies:

  • Base Journal: Choose an old book, handmade journal, or repurpose a notebook. A black or leather-bound cover adds extra gothic appeal.
  • Papers: Tea- or coffee-dyed paper, old book pages, parchment, and textured scrapbook paper work beautifully.
  • Embellishments: Wax seals, lace, dried flowers, pressed leaves, and vintage keys can enhance the eerie vibe.
  • Ephemera: Think tarot cards, old letters, sheet music, vintage anatomy drawings, or Halloween-themed printables.
  • Ink & Stains: Black, sepia, or red ink splatters, distress stains, and burned edges add a haunted effect.
  • Stamps & Stencils: Use gothic fonts, ravens, bats, skulls, or mystical symbols.

Step 2: Create Your Journal Pages

  1. Age Your Pages: Use tea or coffee to stain paper, then crumple and flatten it for an old-world feel. Burning or distressing edges adds an extra eerie touch.
  2. Layering & Textures: Layer lace, tulle, or fabric scraps onto pages. Use torn paper for a worn, mysterious look.
  3. Add Writing Spaces: Even spooky journals need room to write! Create hidden pockets, tuck spots, or use dark-themed stationery.
  4. Include Secret Messages: Write in invisible ink (lemon juice or glow-in-the-dark paint) or use coded symbols for a mysterious effect.

Step 3: Binding & Cover Decoration

  • If making a handmade journal, use a Coptic stitch for an exposed spine look, or bind with black ribbon or twine.
  • Decorate the cover with faux spiderwebs, old book pages, or metallic embellishments like silver moons or gothic crosses.
  • A wax seal on the first page adds an elegant, eerie touch.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

  • Add hanging charms (mini potion bottles, keys, or tiny skulls) for an interactive feel.
  • Use dark poetry, quotes from Edgar Allan Poe, or Latin phrases to enhance the gothic aesthetic.
  • Incorporate flip-outs and hidden pockets with spooky surprises inside, like mini tarot cards or a secret message.

Final Thoughts

A spooky or gothic junk journal is more than just an art project—it’s a spellbinding creation that reflects mystery, nostalgia, and dark beauty. Let your creativity run wild, and don’t be afraid to experiment with unusual materials and textures. Whether you use it for writing, sketching, or as a decorative piece, your journal will be a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Spicy Spagetti Squash with Cranberries-A New Experience

Being the adventurous person I am (with food anyway, ha ha), I seen the golden yellow large squash at the grocery store and thought to myself, hmm...lets try this vegetable thing. I've never had this type of squash but I've heard it was good and also healthy, so I did a cooking challenge with it! First, I cut in half. It was reallly hard to cut. Then, kinda gross, it smelled a bit unappetizing and had all this gunk and seeds inside. Ewe.. I don't know about this...but not giving up! Scraped this all out. Tried to make "spagetti noodles" with a fork but it turned out like slaw LOL. (I probably should have researched this first but it was too late and I was too hungry) Took a little nibble of the raw squash just to get an idea of the flavor...oh my! This might be good! A little sweet and very tasty, not what I was expecting! Mixed it up with EVOO and cumin, had another little taste and Yum! Also, added a little salt and pepper.  ...
